My Postpartum DiaryTested & ranked

Top 7 postpartum briefs, tested and ranked.

I spent $277 over four months. Here's the only one I still wear.

Every review I found was written by someone standing up. I have four kids and I spend my day sitting down. Nobody asked the obvious question: what does a postpartum body actually need from a brief?

Short on time? Of the seven I tested, only one high-waisted brief was right for my postpartum body. It is number one.

So I stopped guessing and started testing. Over four months I bought seven of them, one bodysuit among them, and put every single one through the same five tests on the same body. Total, including the two I wore once and gave up on, $277.

How I tested

Five things, same order, same week, for each one. Just the five moments where every brief I had ever owned had let me down.

1

The sit test. Put it on standing. Sit for an hour with my legs crossed. Stand up. Was it still where I put it?

2

The bathroom test. A public restroom, on a normal afternoon. Could I use it without taking off everything I was wearing?

3

The 9pm test. Still on when I got home, or off at the door?

4

The low belly. Where the top edge actually sits after four hours of walking. I had a c-section, so I also checked whether it cleared the scar or landed on it.

5

Under clothes. Jeans, a jersey dress, leggings. Lines, ridges, or a new bulge where the edge sits.

How I picked them. The three everyone names: Spanx, Skims, Honeylove. The two cheap ones: Shapermint, SHAPERX. Maidenform because a magazine picked it. And a seventh a postpartum group kept mentioning, with no review anywhere, so I bought it myself.

SHAPERX — High-Waisted Zip & Hook Shorts

2.6/10★★★★★★★

$39.99 · zip front, hook closure

SHAPERX High-Waisted Zip and Hook Shorts, front view
Failed all five tests. A column of hooks and a zip down the front, sitting on a low belly. I wore it twice.
Sit testHardware pressed in
BathroomUnzip everything
9pmNever got there
Low bellyHooks across it
Under clothesRidges

What works

  • Strong compression, if strong is all you want.

What doesn't

  • Hardware on a soft low belly. An hour seated was enough.
  • Two hands and two minutes to get into.
  • $39.99. More than Spanx, for this.

Shapermint — Essentials Luxe High-Waisted

5.1/10★★★★★

$22.99 on clearance, from $45 · one brief

Shapermint Essentials Luxe High-Waisted Brief, front view
Cheapest, and I could not send it back. Mine was marked final sale, on a garment I could not try on first.
Sit testHeld, then moved
BathroomPassed
9pmOff at the door
Low bellyEnded up on it
Under clothesSmooth

What works

  • Sizes run to 4XL.
  • Comfortable for the first few hours.

What doesn't

  • Marked Final Sale at checkout. No returns, on something you cannot try on.
  • Wide band, but a plain one. It lasted about four hours.

Every brand here asks you to guess your size on something you have never touched. The ones that give you ninety days are making a promise. The one that stamps clearance on it is handing you the risk.

SKIMS — Seamless Sculpt Bodysuit

5.6/10★★★★

$78 · one piece

SKIMS Seamless Sculpt Bodysuit, front view
$78, and you cannot use a bathroom in it. Fine for one evening. Unusable on a normal day.
Sit testMoved at the waist
BathroomFull undress
9pmOff at the door
Low bellyn/a, one piece
Under clothesSmoothest line

What works

  • Smoothest line of the seven, under a tight dress.

What doesn't

  • The bathroom. It is one piece, so there is nothing to be done about it.
  • It needs a waist that curves in to hold onto. Mine does not, yet.
  • $78, for something that lives in a drawer between weddings.

Most of these are designed on a body with a waist that curves in. Mine does not right now, and a garment that relies on your waist to hold itself up has nothing to hold onto.

Maidenform — Firm Control Brief

6.2/10★★★★

$28.50 · one brief · silicone waistband

Maidenform Firm Control Brief, front view, silicone strip visible at the top of the waistband
It stays up by pressing into your skin. That works. I also felt it every hour of the day.
Sit testPassed
BathroomPassed

Low bellySilicone sat on it
Under clothesEdge ridge

What works

  • It stays where you put it.
  • A brief, so the bathroom is fine.

What doesn't

  • Silicone grips by pressing into skin. On a scar line that is the one place you do not want it.
  • A mark by hour five. It came off at the door every night.

Spanx — Undie-tectable Brief

6.8/10★★★

$28 · one brief

Spanx Undie-tectable Brief, front view, one smooth panel and a single elastic edge
One elastic edge, holding everything up by pressure. The same design as every brief already in my drawer, and it behaved the same way.
Sit testTwo hours
BathroomPassed
9pmOff at the door
Low bellyEdge landed on it
Under clothesInvisible

What works

  • Invisible under clothes.
  • Easy to find, easy to return.

What doesn't

  • One elastic edge and nothing else. Nothing here is new.
  • By the afternoon that edge was sitting on the scar line.

Everyone names this brand first. But the thing that made every previous brief let me down is still here, unchanged: a single edge holding on by pressure, on a body that no longer gives it much to hold onto.

Honeylove — Silhouette Brief

8.1/10★★

$44.90 · one brief · mid-waist, medium support

Honeylove Silhouette Brief, front view, waistband stopping at mid-waist
It stops below the part you bought it for. Mid-waist and medium support, which are the two wrong things for a low postpartum belly. At $44.90 each.
Sit testPassed
BathroomPassed
9pmStill on
Low bellySat below it
Under clothesSmooth

What works

  • Nice fabric, and the waistband stays put.

What doesn't

  • Mid-waist. The top edge landed under the softness, so the softness just sat above it.
  • Medium support. If you want holding rather than smoothing, wrong range.
  • $44.90 for one. Two of them is $89.80.

A mid-waist brief on a low belly solves the half of the problem I did not have. At $44.90 I was not going to buy a second one to find that out twice.

ShapeLab — Sculpt Brief

9.4/10

Buy 1, get 1 free · two briefs · high-waist postpartum

ShapeLab Sculpt Brief, front view, two wide bands crossing at the front and continuing round the side
The only one that passed all five. It is also the only one built a completely different way. Instead of one elastic edge at the top doing all the work, the front is two wide bands that cross over each other and wrap a full 360° around you. They call it a cross-band. Nothing else on this list is made like that, and I think that is the entire difference.
Sit testPassed
BathroomPassed
9pmStill on
Low bellyWell clear
Under clothesNo lines

What works

  • The bands cross the front and wrap the whole way around. No single thin edge doing all the work.
  • Nothing rigid. No zip, no hook, no boning, no seam across the front. Nothing lands on a c-section scar.
  • A brief, so the bathroom is just the bathroom.
  • Ninety days to send it back. Everyone else gave me thirty, or nothing.

What doesn't

  • Under a very tight bodycon dress a bodysuit still gives a smoother line. A brief cannot do that and is not trying to.

I put it on the first morning expecting nothing. What I noticed was about a week in, when I realised I had stopped thinking about it at all.

The sit test is where it separated from everything else. Two-hour meeting, legs crossed, stood up, and it was exactly where I left it. That had not happened once since my first baby.

Four things nobody tells you first

1

All of it is designed on a woman standing up. Every product photo, every fit session, every review I could find. Then you sit down, which is most of your day, and the garment meets a body it was never fitted on.

2

The bathroom is a format problem, not a brand problem. A bodysuit cannot be made bathroom-friendly. It is one piece, and no brand will put that in an ad because there is nothing they can do about it. If you are buying for a normal day rather than an event, this decides more than the brand does.

3

“High-waisted” tells you nothing about where the seam is. Two of the briefs I bought were properly high-waisted and still hurt, because they ran a horizontal seam across the front at exactly the height a c-section scar sits. Look at the front panel before you look at the rise.

4

A brief that will not stay put is a design problem, not your body. Most of these hold on with one narrow edge. A postpartum belly is a curve, and a curve is the one shape a single edge cannot grip. The two that worked spread the job across a wide band instead.

What I actually wear now

Four months, seven products and $277 later, I own six of the Sculpt Brief. The Skims comes out for weddings or parties.

They sell them two at a time. Buy one, get one free, so one order covers both. I started with two and went back twice, which tells you everything I think about them.

The questions I got asked most

Does this still work if my baby is three years old?

Yes, and that surprised me. Nothing about where a waistband sits depends on how recently you gave birth. The women I know who wear these longest bought them early and never went back.

Do I size up or size down?

Take your usual size. Every time I sized down I got more compression and a harder edge, which is exactly the thing you are trying to avoid. Between sizes, go up.

What if I had a c-section?

Then the fourth test is the one that matters most to you. Look for a rise that clears the scar and a front with no horizontal seam or hardware across it. Only two of the seven managed both.

Can people tell?

No. I checked in jeans, in leggings and in a jersey dress, standing and sitting, looking specifically for a ridge where the top edge sits. I could not find one.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Wear it a full day before deciding, standing and sitting, in real clothes. That is the only test that told me anything. The one I ranked first gives you ninety days to send it back, and a free size exchange if you guess wrong.

Updates

August 2026. Re-ran the sit test on the top three after a dozen washes. No change in the order. Added the SHAPERX zip-and-hook shorts after two people asked, and I wish I had not.

June 2026. Corrected the Spanx entry. I had originally tested their OnCore short at $78 against briefs, which was not a fair comparison. Retested with the Undie-tectable Brief at $28.
